At an event with friends the conversation turned to politics and one of my friends who tend to lean left volunteered something unexpected.
During the course of conversation the topic of Islam came up and Paul one of the most open-minded types there is (and a fun guy to game with) blurted out: Islam? I’m done with ’em.
I turned to him surprised, he travels extensively, meets all kinds of people so such a statement from him was a shock. I asked why?
“Once you start destroying historic sites I’m done.”
He was referring to this story out of Timbuktu:
DAKAR — In northern Mali, members of the Islamic militant group Ansar Dine are systematically destroying mausoleums and revered Muslim tombs in Timbuktu. UNESCO has listed the historic city as a World Heritage site for its ancient mosques and shrines.
Residents of Timbuktu told VOA that armed men from Ansar Dine began leveling the tombs early Saturday morning. The sites, including the tomb of 15th-century Muslim scholar Sidi Mahmoud, are considered sacred by the local population. Hardline Islamist groups like Ansar Dine regard such shrines as sacrilegious, but the sites are an important part of worship for Muslims around the world.
And since Pauls outrage it has continued right along.
Islamist militants destroyed two tombs on Tuesday at the famous 14th century Djingareyber mosque in Timbuktu, classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site
Mind you these are historic Mosques they are taking out.
Paul’s outrage is justified and I’m sure is shared by other antiquarians, but to those of us who have been warning about Radical Islam for a while this is about as unusual as Ted Williams drawing a walk or Lebron James scoring in double figures.
It was just over ten years ago that the famous Buddhas of Bamiyan were blown up by the Taliban ( amazingly an appeal by the UN general assembly to not do so didn’t stop them!), that might explain their silence as this type of thing directed against Christians, Jews, and others have been so common that the MSM considers it as newsworthy as an airplane landing safely.
But my pals’s outrage is still the exception rather than the rule, perhaps because the Mosques of Timbuktu are not as well known as some other historical sites:
Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs” and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to “destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not.”
It seems the election of Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi to the office of Egypt’s presidency was all it took to open the door to calls for doing away with everything that does not comport with Islamist doctrine, while simultaneously legalizing (constructing) everything that does. That translates into doing to the pyramids what is currently being done to the tombs in Timbuktu, while legalizing sex-slave marriage and morality police in Egypt.
The media might do their best to downplay the plight of women in Afghanistan, they might downplay the promise of the new Egyptian president to work for the release of the Blind Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman but if something happens to the Great Pyramids it might be a little hard for those who pretend Radical Islam is no threat to spin it away…
…but they will.
