Bible reading can be dangerous to your peace of mind.
I have a confession to make: When I was a young believer in Christ, I thought there would come a time in my life when I would understand most Bible truths and pass from the stage of being a young and uninitiated disciple to the point of becoming a seasoned Spiritual guru.
Thirty-eight years later I marvel at such naivete.
When one studies the Life of JESUS CHRIST, one always comes away with more questions than insights. Perhaps an example will suffice.
I have always marveled over how those closest to JESUS described him in the 4 Gospels. Here is a small sampling from the Gospel of Saint Mark from the 4th chapter which shows Jesus completing His ministry for the day.
33 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.
34 But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.
35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.
36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
The disciples were flabbergasted over what they just witnessed.
JESUS exhausted from a long day of faithful ministry is in the back part of the ship trying to rest and rejuvenate His depleted (only from His humanity) resources. The disciples fearful of the stormy tempest wake JESUS up and ask Him to do something. JESUS without missing a beat arises rebukes the wind by saying, “Peace, be still.” JESUS gets immediate results as the wind ceases amidst a great calm.
JESUS says to His disciples, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
Now in all fairness to the disciples they had good reason to be afraid. They were trying to circumnavigate the tempestuous Sea of Galilee. What many of us may not realize is that the Sea of Galilee is situated some 700 feet below sea level; its main water supply comes from the Jordan River. Due to the Sea’s location, it is often subject to violent storms that arise from wind that descends over the eastern mountains and then drops suddenly into the Sea of Galilee. This force of nature makes it difficult even to navigate with modern 21st century technology.
The Disciples had every reason to fear.
Yet, after JESUS calmed the mercurial winds, the disciples asked themselves this question:
“What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Truth be told I have been asking myself that same question for a lifetime – “What Manner of Man is this…?”
There are so many things about JESUS that commend His Life for Study.
Until recently historical demarcations were split by the use of the nomenclatures B.C. (Before Christ) and Anno Domini (In The Year of Our LORD). Is there any other person who walked this earth who would receive such an honor or high estimation?
Again, the question must be asked, “What Manner of Man is this…?”
The great Scholar, Novelist, and Theologian Clive Staples Lewis – better known as C.S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity that there were many things that we could call JESUS, but the word “good Teacher” would not be one of them.
Lewis states that JESUS was either a Liar (for making false claims of Divinity if only a man), Lunatic (for false designs of being a King with an Eternal Kingdom), – or HE was Truly The LORD OF ALL CREATION.
We pose the question once more, “What Manner of Man is this…?”
For most of my life I have been privileged to call JESUS my LORD and Savior.
How do you see JESUS?
“What Manner of Man is this…?”
